Kenmore 46-9999 Water Filter — Replaces Frigidaire ULTRAWF PureSource Ultra
About the Kenmore 46-9999 Refrigerator Water Filter
The Kenmore 46-9999 (also sold as part number 9999 and 469999) is the ice and water filter cartridge for Kenmore side-by-side and French-door refrigerators in the 253-series, and it is the direct equivalent of the Frigidaire ULTRAWF PureSource Ultra filter. The same cartridge fits a wide range of Frigidaire, Frigidaire Gallery, Frigidaire Professional, Electrolux and Crosley refrigerators that use the PureSource Ultra housing.
Inside the cartridge, an activated carbon block reduces chlorine taste and odor along with sediment and particulates such as rust, sand and dirt, so water and ice from the dispenser taste clean rather than flat or chemical. Rated for 200 gallons or 6 months, whichever comes first, at a 0.5 GPM flow rate.
A worn-out filter is usually easy to spot: the dispenser slows down, ice cubes come out cloudy or small, or the water picks up a noticeable pool-water smell. Swapping in a fresh cartridge takes under a minute and restores normal flow.

The 46-9999 supersedes the earlier 241791601, 242294401 and 242294404 cartridges. If your old filter carries one of those numbers, this is the current replacement.
How to Install the Kenmore 46-9999
- Find the housing. Open the fresh food compartment and look at the ceiling, front right — the filter sits in a round housing there.
- Release the old filter. Push the old cartridge straight up into the housing until it clicks, then let go. It will drop down about half an inch.
- Pull it out. Slide the old cartridge straight down and out. A small amount of water may drip — have a towel ready.
- Remove the cap from the new filter. Take off the protective cover from the new cartridge's o-rings. Do not remove the o-rings themselves.
- Insert the new filter. Line the cartridge up with the housing and push it straight up until it clicks and locks into place.
- Flush the line. Run about 1.5 gallons (roughly 3 minutes) of water through the dispenser to clear trapped air and carbon fines. Some sputtering during the first few cups is normal.
- Reset the filter indicator. Press and hold the filter reset button on the dispenser control panel for about 3 seconds, until the status light changes from red back to green.
- Discard the first batch of ice. Dump the first two or three batches from the ice maker so the bin refills with water from the new cartridge.
When to Replace
| Household | Typical Usage | Suggested Replacement |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 people | Light dispenser and ice use | Every 6 months |
| 3–4 people | Daily drinking water and ice | Every 5–6 months |
| 5+ people | Heavy dispenser use, frequent ice | Every 4–5 months |
| Any household on well water or a high-sediment supply | Higher particulate load | Every 3–4 months |
Replace sooner if dispenser flow slows noticeably or the water picks up a chlorine smell, regardless of the calendar.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Kenmore 46-9999 the same as the Frigidaire ULTRAWF? Yes. The 46-9999 is the Kenmore-branded number for the same PureSource Ultra cartridge sold under the ULTRAWF part number. They are physically identical and interchangeable.
Will this fit my Kenmore Elite 795 refrigerator? No. Kenmore refrigerators with model numbers beginning in 795 are built by LG and use a longer twist-in cartridge. This filter fits Kenmore models beginning in 253.
My old filter says 242294401 — will this work? Yes. The 46-9999 / ULTRAWF replaced the earlier 241791601, 242294401 and 242294404 cartridges and installs in the same housing.
Do I need to shut off the water supply first? No. The housing seals itself when the cartridge is removed, so the water line can stay connected and pressurized throughout.
How long does the filter last? About 200 gallons or 6 months, whichever comes first. Heavy ice and dispenser use will shorten that.
Why is my water sputtering after installation? Trapped air in the line. Run 1.5 gallons through the dispenser and the flow will settle. Some gray specks in the first glass are harmless carbon fines and clear out with flushing.
The filter light is still red after I changed the filter. The indicator is on a timer and does not detect the new cartridge on its own. Hold the reset button on the dispenser panel for about 3 seconds to clear it.
Can I run the refrigerator without a filter installed? Only with the bypass plug that came with the appliance. Without either the filter or the bypass in place, the dispenser and ice maker will not receive water.
How do I find my refrigerator's model number? Open the fresh food compartment and check the label on the interior left wall or on the ceiling. Kenmore numbers are formatted like 253.70443410.
