Kenmore 46-9890 Refrigerator Water Filter (LT500P / 5231JA2002A)

Check your filter shape before you order. This is the short, round, twist-in cartridge used in LG-built Kenmore and LG side-by-side refrigerators. It is not interchangeable with the taller Kenmore 46-9990 (5231JA2006A), or with the French-door style Kenmore 46-9980 (ADQ74793501). If your old filter does not look like the one pictured, it is the wrong part.
Where this filter goes: inside the fresh food compartment, in the top corner of the refrigerator interior. It twists in and out by hand — no tools, and no need to shut off the water supply. This is an internal cartridge, not an inline filter that fits behind or under the refrigerator.

Product Description

The Kenmore 46-9890 is the replacement water filter cartridge for LG-manufactured Kenmore and Kenmore Elite refrigerators, and for the LG models that use the same housing. It is also sold and searched for under the LG designation LT500P and the original part number 5231JA2002A, along with the later LG numbers ADQ72910901, ADQ72910907 and ADQ72910911. These are the same cartridge design under different part numbers issued over the life of the product, so a fridge that shipped with any one of them takes this filter.

Inside the cartridge is an activated carbon block that water passes through on its way to the dispenser and ice maker. It reduces chlorine taste and odour, and traps rust, dirt, sand and other sediment, so the water and ice coming out of the door taste cleaner than unfiltered tap water. Filters are a consumable part: as the carbon loads up, flow slows and the taste improvement fades, which is why they are replaced on a schedule rather than only when something goes wrong.

Installation takes under a minute. The old cartridge twists out, the new one twists in, and you flush a few litres through the dispenser to clear trapped air before drinking. Most people never need a service call for this job.

How to Install

  1. Open the fresh food compartment and locate the filter housing in the top corner of the interior.
  2. Turn the old cartridge anticlockwise about a quarter turn and pull it straight out. A small amount of water may drip — have a cloth ready.
  3. Remove the protective cap from the new filter and check the O-rings are seated and undamaged.
  4. Push the new cartridge into the housing and turn it clockwise until it stops and sits flush.
  5. Run about 8 to 10 litres (2 to 3 gallons) of water through the dispenser to purge trapped air. Spluttering and cloudy water at this stage is normal and clears as you flush.
  6. Discard the first two or three batches of ice so the ice maker clears any residual carbon fines.
  7. Reset the filter indicator light by pressing and holding the filter or reset button on the dispenser panel for about three to five seconds.

Holiday home or occasional use Every 6 months regardless of volume used
Noticeably slower dispenser flow or returning chlorine taste Replace now, whatever the date

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Kenmore 46-9890 the same as the LG LT500P?They are the same cartridge sold under two brands. Kenmore refrigerators of this era were built by LG, so the filter carries the Kenmore number 46-9890 and the LG number LT500P / 5231JA2002A. Either number will get you the correct part.

My old filter says ADQ72910911, not 5231JA2002A. Will this fit?Yes. LG reissued this cartridge under several part numbers over the years — 5231JA2002A, ADQ72910901, ADQ72910902, ADQ72910907 and ADQ72910911 all describe the same filter and the same housing.

How do I know this is the right shape for my fridge?Pull your existing filter out and compare it to the product photos. This one is a short, round cartridge that twists into a housing inside the fresh food compartment. If yours is taller, oval, or mounted in the base grille, you need a different part number.

Do I need to turn off the water supply? No. The housing seals itself when the cartridge is removed. Expect a small dribble of water as the old filter comes out and keep a cloth to hand.

Why is my water cloudy after fitting a new filter?Air trapped in the new cartridge. It looks like fine white bubbles that clear from the bottom of the glass upwards. Flushing 8 to 10 litres through the dispenser resolves it.

What if the filter indicator light stays on?The light runs on a timer and does not detect the new filter automatically. Press and hold the filter or reset button on the dispenser panel for three to five seconds until the light changes.

Can I run the refrigerator without a filter fitted? Most models of this generation need either a filter or a bypass plug in the housing for the dispenser to work. Running without a filter means unfiltered water at the dispenser and ice maker.

Does it filter the ice maker as well as the dispenser?Yes. Water reaches the ice maker through the same line, so the ice benefits from the same reduction in chlorine taste and sediment.
