Kenmore 46-9990 Refrigerator Water Filter — Replaces 5231JA2006A, 5231JA2006B & LG LT600P
Check your part number before ordering. The 46-9990 is not the same filter as the 46-9999, 46-9690 (LG LT700P), 46-9890 (LG LT500P) or 46-9980 (LG LT1000P). These part numbers look similar but the cartridges are different shapes and will not fit each other's housings. If your old filter is a short push-in cartridge rather than a long cylinder, you need a different filter.
Where this filter goes: the 46-9990 is a long cylindrical cartridge that mounts inside the fresh food compartment, usually in the upper right rear corner near the ceiling. It is white with a blue cap and measures roughly 12⅛" long by 2¼" in diameter. It installs with a quarter-turn twist — no tools, no water shut-off.

This is a replacement refrigerator water filter for Kenmore and LG refrigerators that use the 46-9990 cartridge. It fits the same housing as Kenmore part numbers 9990, 469990 and 46-9990, LG part numbers 5231JA2006A, 5231JA2006B, 5231JA2006E and 5231JA2006F, and the LG filter marketed as LT600P.
Many Kenmore side-by-side and bottom-freezer refrigerators in the 795 series were built by LG, which is why the same cartridge carries both a Kenmore number and an LG number. If your existing filter is stamped with any of the 5231JA2006 codes, or if the manual calls for LT600P, this is the correct replacement.
The cartridge uses a coconut shell activated carbon block to reduce chlorine taste and odour and to capture sediment and fine particulates, so water and ice from the dispenser taste clean rather than flat or chemical. Installation
- Open the fresh food compartment and locate the filter housing in the upper right rear corner. There is no need to shut off the water supply.
- Grip the old cartridge and rotate it counterclockwise about a quarter turn until it releases, then pull it straight out. A small amount of water may drip — have a cloth ready.
- Remove the protective cap from the new filter and check the O-rings are seated and undamaged.
- Slide the new cartridge into the housing and rotate clockwise about a quarter turn until it stops and sits flush.
- Run roughly 2.5 gallons of water through the dispenser to purge trapped air and loose carbon fines. Sputtering and slightly grey water during this flush are normal and clear on their own.
- If your refrigerator has a filter indicator light, press and hold the reset button for about three seconds until it clears.
- Discard the first two or three batches of ice so the ice maker clears any residual air.

Is the Kenmore 46-9990 the same as the LG LT600P?
Yes. It is the same cartridge in the same housing, sold under a Kenmore number for Kenmore-badged refrigerators and an LG number for LG-badged ones. Either will fit.
My old filter says 5231JA2006F, but this listing says 5231JA2006A. Will it still fit?
Yes. The trailing letter is a production revision, not a different cartridge. 5231JA2006, 5231JA2006A, 5231JA2006B, 5231JA2006E, 5231JA2006F and 5231JA2006H all use the same housing and are interchangeable, along with the -S suffixed versions.
Is the 46-9990 the same as the 46-9999?
No. Despite the similar numbers these are different filters and do not interchange. Check the number printed on the cartridge you are removing rather than going by memory.
How is this different from the 46-9690 or 46-9980?
The 46-9690 is the LG LT700P and the 46-9980 is the LG LT1000P. Both are shorter cartridges that mount in different housings on newer refrigerators. If your existing filter is a long cylinder in the upper right rear of the fridge compartment, the 46-9990 is the one you want.
Do I need to turn off the water supply to change it?
No. The housing seals itself when the cartridge is removed. Expect a few drips at most.
Why is the water cloudy or spitting after I install the new filter?
Air trapped in the new cartridge. Flushing about 2.5 gallons through the dispenser clears it. If flow is still weak after flushing, check that the cartridge is fully rotated into the locked position.
How long does one filter last?
Up to 300 gallons or six months of typical household use. Larger households and homes with heavier sediment in the supply will get through a cartridge faster.
