The 46-9980 is the Kenmore part number for the filter LG sells as the LT1000P. It is a short twist-in cartridge that mounts inside the fresh food compartment.
It is not interchangeable with the Kenmore 46-9690 (LG LT700P) or the Kenmore 46-9490 (LG LT800P). Those are different lengths and different bayonet fittings. Installation
- Open the fresh food compartment and locate the filter cover in the upper right-hand corner of the ceiling. Lift or swing the cover open.
- Turn the old cartridge counter-clockwise about a quarter turn and pull it straight down. A small amount of water may drip — have a cloth ready.
- Remove the protective cap from the new filter. Do not soak or pre-rinse the cartridge.
- Push the new filter up into the housing and turn it clockwise until it stops and sits flush. It should feel firmly seated, not loose.
- Close the cover and dispense approximately 2.5 gallons of water — about five minutes of running the dispenser — to purge trapped air and loose carbon fines. Spluttering and grey-tinted water during this stage are normal.
- Reset the filter indicator: press and hold the filter reset button on the dispenser panel for about three seconds until the light changes from red to green.
- Discard the first two full batches of ice produced after the change.

Do I have to reset the filter light?
The indicator runs on a timer, not a sensor, so it will not clear on its own. Hold the filter reset button on the dispenser panel for roughly three seconds after installation. On some models the button is labelled with a filter icon rather than the word "filter".
