About the Kenmore 46-9083 Water Filter

The Kenmore 46-9083 (also sold as 46-9030 and 46-9020) is the Sears/Kenmore part number for the Whirlpool-family base-grille water filter better known as Filter 3. It is the direct replacement for Whirlpool 4396841 and 4396710, and for the current EveryDrop EDR3RXD1 cartridge. All of these are the same physical filter with the same push-button housing — the number on the label simply changes depending on which brand sold the refrigerator.

Inside the cartridge is an activated carbon block that water passes through on its way to the dispenser and the ice maker. As water flows through the carbon, it reduces chlorine taste, odor and sediment, so the water you pour and the ice you make taste noticeably cleaner than untreated tap water. The filter carries a 6-month service life under typical household use.

This cartridge is used across side-by-side refrigerators built by Whirlpool for the Kenmore, Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag, Amana and Jenn-Air nameplates. If your refrigerator has a push-button filter in the base grille and your old cartridge carries any of the numbers listed below, this is the correct replacement.

How to Install

1. Open the lower front grille at the base of the refrigerator, or locate the round filter cap exposed in the grille.
2. Press the release button next to the cartridge. The old filter will pop forward about an inch.
3. Pull the old cartridge straight out. A small amount of water may drip — keep a towel underneath.
4. Remove the protective caps from the new filter and check that the O-rings are seated and undamaged.
5. Slide the new cartridge straight into the housing until the button clicks flush. Do not twist.
6. Dispense roughly 2–3 gallons of water to purge trapped air. Sputtering and cloudiness during this step are normal.
7. Reset the filter indicator light. On most models, press and hold the Filter or Reset button on the dispenser panel for about three seconds.
8. Discard the first full bin of ice after installation.
