Check the number printed on your current filter before ordering. This is the 9082 / Filter 2 cartridge — the twist-in filter that sits in a hinged tray in the ceiling of the fridge compartment. It is a different cartridge from Kenmore 9081 (Filter 1) and 9083 (Filter 3), and it does not fit LG-built Kenmore Elite 795-series refrigerators, which use 9490, 9690, 9980 or 9990. If your old filter reads 9082, 9903, 9924, EDR2RXD1 or W10413645A, this is the correct cartridge.
Where this filter goes: upper right-hand corner of the refrigerator ceiling, inside a small drop-down tray. Push the tab to release the tray door, then twist the cartridge a quarter turn to the left to remove it. No tools and no water shut-off required.

About the Kenmore 46-9082 Water Filter

The Kenmore 46-9082 is the replacement water filter cartridge for Whirlpool-built Kenmore and Kenmore Elite bottom-freezer refrigerators that use the Filter 2 housing. It is the same cartridge sold under the everydrop EDR2RXD1 number and the earlier Whirlpool W10413645A, W10413645, W10238154 and W10744238 numbers, and under Kenmore part numbers 46-9903 and 46-9924.

Inside the cartridge is a compressed activated carbon block rated for approximately 200 gallons or 6 months of use, whichever comes first. It reduces chlorine taste, chlorine odor and sediment in both the water dispenser and the ice maker, so dispensed water tastes cleaner and ice comes out clear rather than cloudy or flavored. The cartridge measures roughly 7.25″ long × 1.9″ in diameter and flows at about 0.6–0.75 GPM at normal household supply pressure.

Because the housing is a quarter-turn tray design, the swap takes under a minute and does not require pulling the refrigerator out, shutting off the supply line, or draining anything.

How to Replace the 46-9082 Filter

  1. Open the refrigerator door and look at the ceiling in the upper right-hand corner for the small filter tray.
  2. Press the locking tab to release the tray door and let it swing down.
  3. Twist the old cartridge counterclockwise (to the left) about a quarter turn until it stops, then pull it straight out. A small amount of water may drip — keep a towel underneath.
  4. Remove the protective caps from both ends of the new cartridge.
  5. Line the cartridge up with the notch in the housing, push it in, and twist clockwise (to the right) until it stops and seats firmly.
  6. Swing the tray door back up until the tab latches.
  7. Run 2–4 gallons through the dispenser, pausing every few glasses, to purge trapped air and loose carbon fines. Grey-tinted water on the first few pours is normal and clears on its own.
  8. Reset the filter indicator by holding the Filter Reset (or Water Filter) button on the control panel for about 3 seconds until the light changes from red to green.
  9. Discard the first two batches of ice so the ice maker is not left with pre-flush water.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Kenmore 46-9082 the same as EDR2RXD1? Yes. 46-9082 is the Kenmore number for the same Filter 2 cartridge sold as everydrop EDR2RXD1 and, before that, as Whirlpool W10413645A. Same housing, same fit, same quarter-turn installation.

My old filter says 9903 or 9924 — will this work? Yes. Kenmore used 9903 and 9924 for this cartridge on earlier production runs. All three numbers point to the same Filter 2 cartridge and interchange freely.

Will this fit my Kenmore Elite 795-series refrigerator? No. The 795 series is built on a different platform and uses a different filter body — usually 46-9490, 46-9690, 46-9980 or 46-9990. Confirm the number on your existing cartridge or your refrigerator's model number before ordering.

What does this filter actually do? It reduces chlorine taste, chlorine odor and sediment in the water that reaches your dispenser and ice maker. That is what removes the "pool water" flavor from drinking water and keeps ice from picking up an off taste.

Why is my water grey or cloudy after installing it? Fine carbon dust from a fresh cartridge, plus air trapped in the line. It is expected and clears after you flush 2–4 gallons through the dispenser.

Water flow got slow right after installation — what happened? Almost always an incomplete quarter turn. Twist the cartridge out and reseat it, turning clockwise until it firmly stops. If flow is still slow, check that supply pressure is at least 30 psi.

My filter light stayed red after the swap. The indicator is a timer, not a sensor, and has to be reset by hand. Hold the Filter Reset or Water Filter button for roughly 3 seconds until it turns green.

Can I skip the filter and use the bypass plug? On models that accept a bypass, water will still dispense, but unfiltered — you lose chlorine taste and odor reduction entirely. A cartridge is the better default.
