GE XWFE Genuine Refrigerator Water Filter with RFID Chip – Replaces XWF
The XWFE is not interchangeable with the RPWFE, MWF, MSWF, GSWF or GWF filters. These are different shapes and will not fit an XWFE filter port.

Some GE series — including certain CFE28, GFE26 and GYE22 models — were built with either an XWFE or an RPWFE port depending on the exact suffix. Always match your full model number, not just the first five characters.
GE replaced the XWF with the XWFE. The XWFE fits every refrigerator that originally used an XWF, so if your fridge came with an XWF, this is the correct current filter.
The reverse is not true. Newer models are built for the XWFE and read its RFID chip — an XWF has no chip and water may not dispense in those refrigerators.

Product Description
This is the genuine GE XWFE refrigerator water filter, supplied factory sealed with the RFID chip intact. It is the current OEM replacement for the discontinued XWF and fits select GE, GE Profile, Café and Monogram French door, side-by-side and bottom freezer refrigerators.
The activated carbon block reduces chlorine taste and odor and traps sediment, so dispensed water and ice taste cleaner. The filter is rated for approximately 6 months or 300 gallons, whichever comes first.
The embedded RFID chip is what separates the XWFE from the older XWF. It communicates with the refrigerator's control board to confirm a genuine filter is fitted and supports the leak-detection function on models that have it, closing the water valve if a leak is sensed at the filter head. Aftermarket filters without a working chip commonly cause a persistent "Replace Filter" message or no water flow at all.

Note on bypass plugs: WR17X33825 is the XWF/XWFE bypass plug, not a filter. It is sold separately and is used only when you want to run the refrigerator without a filter, such as when feeding it from an external filtration system.
Installation Instructions
- Locate the filter housing — upper right corner inside the fresh food compartment, upper left wall, or inside the left door, depending on your model.
- Turn the old filter counter-clockwise about a quarter turn and pull it straight out. Have a cloth ready, as a small amount of water may drip.
- Remove the protective cap from the new XWFE and check the O-rings are seated and undamaged.
- Push the new filter straight into the housing until it stops, then turn clockwise until it locks. The XWFE has slots at the top that the older XWF did not, so it may take slightly more force to seat.
- Dispense and discard approximately 2 to 3 gallons of water, or run the dispenser for 3 to 5 minutes, to clear trapped air and loose carbon fines. Some sputtering and cloudiness during this stage is normal.
- Reset the filter indicator by pressing and holding the Reset Filter or Water Filter button on the dispenser panel for about 3 seconds.
- Discard the first two or three batches of ice.

Frequently Asked Questions
My refrigerator came with an XWF. Can I use the XWFE?
Yes. The XWFE is the direct replacement for the XWF and fits all refrigerators that used the XWF. Size, shape and installation are unchanged.
My refrigerator came with an XWFE. Can I go back to an XWF?
No. Models built for the XWFE look for the RFID chip. An XWF has no chip, so the display may keep reporting a filter problem and water may not dispense.
Is the XWFE the same as the RPWFE?
No. Both carry an RFID chip, but they are completely different shapes and are not interchangeable. If your current filter is the shorter, wider style, you need the RPWFE.
Why does my new filter still show "Replace Filter"?
The indicator is a timer and needs a manual reset. Hold the Reset Filter or Water Filter button for about 3 seconds after installation. If the message persists, remove and reseat the filter to make sure it is fully locked so the chip can be read.
How long is the filter good for?
Approximately 6 months or 300 gallons, whichever comes first. On models with a filter status display you can check the remaining percentage on the dispenser panel.
Why is the water sputtering after installation?
Air trapped in the new filter housing. Run 2 to 3 gallons through the dispenser and it will clear.
Can I run the refrigerator without a filter?
Only with the correct bypass plug, part WR17X33825, sold separately. Without either a filter or a bypass plug fitted, most models will not dispense water.
Does this affect my refrigerator warranty?
No. This is a genuine GE OEM filter, so it keeps you within GE's requirement to use an approved filter.
