The GE XWF is the twist-in replacement water filter for GE refrigerators built after June 2018 that use a non-chip cartridge. It sits inside the fresh food compartment, in the upper right corner, and feeds both the water dispenser and the ice maker.
Fitting it takes under a minute. There are no tools involved, no water shut-off, and no filter housing to unscrew — the old cartridge twists out, the new one twists in and locks. How to Install the GE XWF Filter
- Open the fridge and look up and right. The cartridge sits in the upper right corner of the fresh food compartment. There is no need to turn off the water supply.
- Twist the old filter out. Turn it roughly a quarter turn counter-clockwise, then pull it straight out. A small amount of water may drip — keep a cloth handy.
- Twist the new filter in. Push it into the housing and turn clockwise until it stops and sits flush.
- Flush about two gallons. Run the dispenser for roughly five minutes to clear trapped air. Cloudy or sputtering water at first is normal and clears as the air works out.
- Dump the first two batches of ice. The first ice made after a filter change can taste off.
- Reset the filter indicator. Press and hold the reset button on the dispenser panel until the light clears, usually about three seconds.
