Genuine GE RPWFE Refrigerator Water Filter with RFID Chip

Before you order — check your filter part number. The RPWFE has an RFID chip and is not the same as the RPWF (no chip) or the XWF / XWFE. If your refrigerator came with an RPWF, the RPWFE will fit and work as an upgrade. If it came with an XWF or XWFE, this filter will not fit — see our XWFE listing instead.
Where this filter goes: the RPWFE installs in the upper left corner of the fresh food compartment, at the top of the refrigerator interior. If your filter sits in the base grille below the doors, or in a cassette behind a flip-down door, you have a different filter.

Product Description

The GE RPWFE is the genuine OEM replacement water filter for select GE, GE Profile, Café and Monogram French-door, side-by-side and bottom-freezer refrigerators. Introduced in 2017, it superseded the earlier RPWF cartridge and adds a built-in RFID chip that communicates with the refrigerator's control board to track filter life and support the appliance's leak-detection function.

Each cartridge uses an activated carbon block media designed to reduce chlorine taste and odor and sediment, for cleaner-tasting water and clearer ice. This is a factory-sealed genuine GE part — not an aftermarket copy — so the RFID chip is recognised correctly and the filter status indicator resets on its own after installation.

Key Features

  • Genuine GE OEM part — factory sealed, correct fit and a chip your refrigerator will read
  • RFID chip — supports filter-life tracking and the refrigerator's leak-detection system
  • Improves taste — reduces chlorine taste and odor and sediment
  • Replaces the RPWF — backward compatible with every model that originally used the RPWF
  • Tool-free installation — twist-and-lock cartridge, no plumbing work and no water shut-off needed
  • 300 gallon / 6 month capacity — whichever comes first
  • Automatic reset — the RFID chip clears the filter indicator, so there is no button to hold

RPWFE vs RPWF — Which One Do You Need?

The two cartridges are the same shape and both physically fit the same housing, but they are not interchangeable in both directions:

  • If your refrigerator uses the RPWF (older, no chip) — the RPWFE fits and works. It is the current replacement.
  • If your refrigerator requires the RPWFE — you cannot substitute an RPWF. Without the chip, the appliance will not recognise a filter and water flow to the dispenser and ice maker may be restricted.

If you are unsure, pull your existing filter out and read the part number printed on the label, or check the model number on the sticker inside the fresh food compartment against the lists below.

Alternate Part Numbers

This filter is also sold and referenced as: RPWFE, RPWFE3PK, WR17X30702, WR17X33825, 239D9200P004, 239D9200P006, MSWF-RPWFE.

Note: RPWF is a different cartridge, not an alternate number for this one. Aftermarket equivalents such as WSG-4, DWF-36, WF277 and RWF3600A are third-party filters and do not include a functioning RFID chip.

How to Install

  1. Open the refrigerator and locate the filter housing in the upper left corner of the fresh food compartment.
  2. Push the release button or swing the housing cover down, depending on your model.
  3. Pull the old cartridge straight out. A small amount of water may drip — have a cloth ready.
  4. Remove the protective cap from the new RPWFE and line up the cartridge with the housing.
  5. Push it in and turn clockwise until it seats and locks. It should feel firm, with no play.
  6. Close the cover. Run about two gallons of water through the dispenser — roughly five minutes — to purge trapped air and loose carbon fines.
  7. Discard the first two or three batches of ice. The filter indicator resets on its own via the RFID chip.

Replacement Schedule

Household water use Recommended replacement
Light (1–2 people) Every 6 months
Average (3–4 people) Every 5–6 months
Heavy (5+ people, or heavy ice use) Every 4–5 months
Rated capacity 300 gallons, or 6 months — whichever comes first

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use an RPWF instead of an RPWFE? Only if your refrigerator originally shipped with an RPWF. Models that specify the RPWFE need the chip, and an RPWF will not be recognised.

Is the RPWFE the same as the XWFE? No. They are different shapes and fit different housings. The XWF and XWFE are used in a separate range of GE refrigerators.

My refrigerator still shows "replace filter" after installation. Give it a few minutes and run water through the dispenser. If the message stays, the cartridge may not be fully seated — remove it and turn it again until it locks firmly.

Do I need to shut off the water supply? No. The housing seals itself when the cartridge is removed.

Why is my water cloudy at first? Trapped air in the new cartridge. It clears after a few gallons.

Is this a genuine GE filter? Yes — factory-sealed genuine GE OEM stock, not an aftermarket equivalent.

What if I order the wrong filter? Send us your refrigerator model number and we will identify the right one. Unopened filters can be returned under our standard returns policy.
