Description

Genuine Moen 1224 Two-Handle Faucet Replacement Cartridge

⚠ This cartridge is for two-handle faucets only The 1224 controls a single water supply — hot or cold. Two-handle faucets require two cartridges (one per side). It is not compatible with single-handle faucets (use 1225/1255), Posi-Temp shower valves (use 1222), or Roman tub faucets. If your faucet was manufactured more recently, it may use the 1234 Duralast cartridge instead — check your faucet's documentation to confirm.

About This Part

The Moen 1224 is the genuine OEM replacement cartridge for Moen two-handle kitchen, bathroom, and tub/shower faucets. Each cartridge controls the flow from one supply line — hot on one side, cold on the other — so a complete faucet repair typically requires replacing both cartridges at the same time.

This is a genuine Moen part. The 1224 fits two-handle centerset and widespread lavatory faucets, two-handle kitchen faucets, and two- and three-handle tub/shower valves. It does not fit Roman tub faucets.

Key Features

  • Genuine Moen OEM part — same cartridge originally installed at the factory
  • Fits both the hot and cold sides — one part number covers both positions
  • Compatible with two-handle kitchen faucets, lavatory faucets, and 2- and 3-handle tub/shower valves
  • Solid brass construction for long-term corrosion resistance
  • ADA compliant
  • Fully interchangeable with 1224B — either variant fits the same valve bodies
  • Backed by Moen's Limited Lifetime Warranty

1224 vs. 1224B — What's the Difference?

The 1224 and 1224B are functionally identical and fully interchangeable. The "B" suffix denotes a brass stem variant versus a composite stem in the standard 1224 — both share the same external dimensions and fit the same valve bodies. Either can be used to replace the other.

Embedded Cartridge Nut — Important Note

ℹ Some faucets have an embedded cartridge nut Certain Moen two-handle faucets use a cartridge nut that is integrated into the valve body rather than a separate removable nut. This configuration is not shown in Moen's standard 1224 installation video. If you have an embedded nut, Moen recommends using the dedicated cartridge removal tool (part 14272) and contacting Moen support at 1-800-BUY-MOEN for guidance specific to your faucet. Check your faucet's original documentation to confirm whether your valve has an embedded nut.

Compatible Faucet Types

The 1224 fits Moen two-handle faucets across the following configurations:

4" centerset lavatory faucets Widespread lavatory faucets Two-handle kitchen faucets (with or without escutcheon) Two-handle tub/shower valves Three-handle tub/shower valves

Does not fit: Roman tub faucets, single-handle faucets, or Posi-Temp shower valves.

Compatible Faucet Series

Moen faucet lines known to use the 1224 cartridge include:

Chateau Monticello Baystone Cameron Castleby Cornerstone Darcy Kingsley Rothbury Salora

This list is not exhaustive. Verify your cartridge number using the documentation that came with your faucet or Moen's cartridge finder at moen.com.

Installation Overview

The 1224 installation procedure varies slightly depending on whether your faucet has a standard removable cartridge nut or an embedded nut. The steps below cover the standard configuration. Moen's full video tutorial is available at moen.com — search "1224 cartridge replacement tutorial."

  1. Shut off the water supply — close the hot and cold shut-off valves under the sink (or the main supply if there are no local valves).
  2. Open both handles to release pressure and drain any remaining water from the lines.
  3. Remove the handle — pry off the decorative cap, unscrew the handle screw, and pull the handle off. Repeat for both sides if replacing both cartridges.
  4. Flush the valve body — before inserting the new cartridge, Moen recommends cleaning the inside of the valve body with a soft brush (such as an old toothbrush) to remove mineral deposits.
  5. Remove the cartridge nut — use pliers or the Moen 14272 removal tool to unscrew the brass retaining nut. If the nut is embedded, contact Moen support before proceeding.
  6. Pull out the old cartridge — grip the top of the cartridge with pliers and pull straight out. Mineral buildup may require firm, steady pressure.
  7. Orient the new cartridge — align the tab on the side of the cartridge with the notch in the valve body wall. Rotate the stem to the correct position for the side you are working on (hot vs. cold orientation differs — refer to Moen's diagram for your specific faucet).
  8. Seat the cartridge — slide it firmly into the valve body until fully seated.
  9. Reinstall the cartridge nut — thread it back in and tighten with pliers. Do not overtighten.
  10. Reinstall the stem extension and handle, then restore the water supply and test both handles for leaks and correct hot/cold operation.

Recommended Accessory

Moen's cartridge removal tool (part 14272) is specifically designed to remove 1224 retainer nuts and extract stubborn cartridges without damaging the valve body. It is sold separately and is particularly useful for older faucets where the cartridge has been in place for many years.

FAQ

Do I need to replace both cartridges, or just the leaking side?

If one cartridge is leaking, replacing only the faulty side is sufficient. However, if the faucet is old and both cartridges have similar wear, replacing both at the same time is worthwhile — it saves labour and reduces the chance of the second side failing shortly afterward.

My hot and cold are reversed after installation. What went wrong?

The cartridge stem orientation controls which direction is on/off. If the hot and cold are reversed, one or both cartridges were installed with the stem rotated 180°. Shut off the water, remove the cartridge(s), and reinstall with the stem in the correct position for each side. Moen's installation diagram shows the correct stem orientation for the hot and cold positions.

How do I know if I have a 1224 or a 1234 Duralast?

The 1224 uses a brass retaining nut to secure the cartridge in the valve body. The 1234 Duralast is a ceramic disc cartridge used in newer Moen two-handle faucets and has a different profile. Your faucet's original documentation will list the correct cartridge number. If you're unsure, Moen can confirm the correct part by faucet model number — call 1-800-BUY-MOEN.

Can I use this in a Posi-Temp or Roman tub faucet?

No. Posi-Temp shower valves use the 1222 cartridge, which is a pressure-balancing design not compatible with the 1224 valve body. Roman tub faucets require a different cartridge series entirely. The 1224 is for two-handle kitchen, lavatory, and standard tub/shower valves only.

The cartridge is stuck and won't pull out. What should I do?

Mineral scale buildup is the most common cause. Moen's 14272 removal tool is designed to extract stubborn cartridges from the 1224 valve body. Applying penetrating oil around the base of the cartridge and letting it sit for several minutes can also help loosen scale. Do not use excessive force or a twisting motion — pull straight out to avoid damaging the valve body.
