GE RPWF Refrigerator Water Filter

⚠️ CRITICAL — RPWF vs RPWFE: Read Before Purchasing: The GE RPWF and GE RPWFE are two different filters. The key difference is that the RPWFE contains a built-in RFID chip that communicates with your refrigerator's control panel for leak detection and filter status monitoring, while the RPWF has no chip. If your refrigerator requires the RPWFE (manufactured after 2017), the RPWF will NOT work — your refrigerator will display an error or will not dispense water. Check your current filter's label before ordering.
✓ This Filter Is For: GE French door refrigerators manufactured before 2017 that use the RPWF filter (no chip required). Compatible with models beginning with CFE28TSH, CWE23SS, CYE22TSH, CYE23TSD, GFE26GGH, GFE26GMH, GFE26GSH, GFE29HSD, GNE26GSD, GFE28HSH, GFE28HGH, GFE28HMH, GNE29GGH, GNE29GMH, GNE29GSH, GYE22KMH, GYE22KSH, PYE22PS, PYE23KSD, PYE23PSD, PFE27KSD, PFE28RSH, PFE29PSD, PWE23KGD, PWE23KMD, PWE23KSD.

Important Compatibility Note: The RPWFE filter is backwards compatible — it can be used in refrigerators that require the RPWF. However, the RPWF is NOT forward compatible — it cannot be used in refrigerators that require the RPWFE. If you are unsure which filter your refrigerator uses, the RPWFE is the safer purchase as it works in both refrigerator types.

How to Confirm You Need the RPWF (Not RPWFE)

  • Your current filter is labeled RPWF or one of the alternate part numbers listed below
  • Your refrigerator was manufactured before 2017
  • Your refrigerator does not display a filter authentication or chip error after installation
  • Your refrigerator model begins with one of the prefixes listed in the compatibility section below

Product Description

The GE RPWF refrigerator water filter is designed for select GE French door refrigerators manufactured before 2017. Located inside the left refrigerator door panel, this filter delivers clean, great-tasting water and ice by effectively reducing chlorine taste and odor while removing sediments and particulates.

The RPWF uses a swing-out installation design — unlike most GE filters, this filter does NOT twist. Simply open the filter door, pull the old filter straight out, and push the new one straight in. No tools and no water shutoff required.

Compatibility Tip: This filter is for GE French door refrigerators manufactured before 2017. The filter is located inside the left refrigerator door — if your filter is in a different location (such as the top right corner inside the fridge), you likely have a different filter model. To confirm compatibility, check that your current filter is labeled RPWF or matches one of the part numbers listed below.

Alternate Compatible Part Numbers

RPWF, RWF1063, RWF3600A, WSG-4, DWF-36, WF277, R-3600, MPF15350, OPFG3-RF300, WD-F19C, MB-F19C

Installation Instructions

  1. Locate the Filter: Open the left refrigerator door — the filter housing is on the inside door panel
  2. Open the Filter Door: Pull open the filter compartment door to expose the filter cartridge
  3. Remove Old Filter: Pull the bottom of the old cartridge outward to swing it out, then pull straight out to unseat it. Do NOT twist. A small amount of water may drip — this is normal
  4. Install New Filter: Center the new cartridge with the word "FRONT" facing outward. Push straight in until fully seated, then swing the filter door closed
  5. Flush the System: Run water through the dispenser for approximately 2 gallons (around 5 minutes) to flush air and activate the filter. Initial water may appear slightly cloudy — this is normal
  6. Discard Initial Ice: Discard the first bin of ice produced after installation
  7. Reset Filter Indicator: Press and hold the filter reset button on your refrigerator display until the indicator resets
? Installation Tip: This filter uses a swing-out design — do NOT twist the cartridge. Twisting can damage the filter housing. Simply push straight in until the filter seats firmly, then close the compartment door.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the RPWF if my refrigerator requires the RPWFE?

No. If your refrigerator requires the RPWFE filter, the RPWF will not work correctly. The RPWFE contains a built-in RFID chip that communicates with your refrigerator's control panel for filter status monitoring and leak detection. Without this chip, your refrigerator may display an error message or refuse to dispense water. Always use the filter specified for your refrigerator model.

Can I use the RPWFE in a refrigerator that uses the RPWF?

Yes. The RPWFE is backwards compatible and will work in refrigerators that use the RPWF filter. If you are unsure which filter your refrigerator requires, the RPWFE is the safer choice as it is compatible with both refrigerator types.

How do I know if my refrigerator needs the RPWF or RPWFE?

Check the label on your current filter — if it says RPWF, WSG-4, RWF1063, or RWF3600A, you need this filter. If it says RPWFE, you need the RPWFE instead. As a general rule, refrigerators manufactured before 2017 use the RPWF, while those manufactured after 2017 use the RPWFE.

How is this filter installed — does it twist in like other GE filters?

No. Unlike most GE filters, the RPWF uses a swing-out push-in design. Open the filter door on the inside of your left refrigerator door, swing the old filter outward, and pull it straight out. Insert the new filter straight in with the "FRONT" label facing out, then close the compartment. Do NOT twist — twisting can damage the filter housing.

Where is the filter located in my refrigerator?

The RPWF filter is located on the inner panel of the left refrigerator door inside a small compartment. This is different from many GE filters which are located in the upper right corner inside the refrigerator compartment.
