The GSWF is a slim interior cartridge used in GE top-freezer, bottom-freezer and French-door refrigerators. It is not interchangeable with the MSWF or MWF / MWFP filters used in GE side-by-side models such as the GSH, GSL, GSS and PSS series — those cartridges are a different size and will not seat in a GSWF holder.

The GSWF installs inside the fresh-food compartment, in a cartridge holder behind a hinged cover — usually along the upper right wall on top-freezer models, or in the upper-left/rear area on bottom-freezer and French-door models. It seats with a quarter-turn twist and needs no tools.
If your filter is mounted behind the base grille at the bottom of the refrigerator, or in the rear top-right corner of a newer French-door model, you need an RPWF / RPWFE or XWF / XWFE instead.

The GE GSWF SmartWater cartridge is the factory-specified replacement filter for a wide range of GE, GE Profile and Café refrigerators built with the slim interior filter housing, and it is the same filter Kenmore lists under part number 46-9914. It reduces chlorine taste, odor and sediment in your drinking water and ice, so both taste noticeably cleaner than unfiltered supply water.
Because the cartridge is designed around GE's twist-and-lock holder, it seats squarely on the first attempt and seals without the leaks and drips that generic cartridges often cause. Replacement takes under a minute and requires no tools, no shut-off valve, and no draining of the water line.

How to Install
- Open the filter cover inside the fresh-food compartment by pushing in where indicated. The cover rotates roughly a quarter turn.
- Turn the old cartridge counter-clockwise about a quarter turn and pull it straight out. A small amount of water may drip — have a towel ready.
- Remove the protective caps from the new GSWF cartridge.
- Slide the new cartridge into the holder and rotate it clockwise until it stops. When seated correctly the gripping blade sits vertically on top-freezer models and horizontally on bottom-freezer models.
- Close the filter cover.
- Run roughly 1.5 gallons (about 5 minutes) through the dispenser to purge trapped air and carbon fines. Sputtering and grey-tinted water during this step are normal.
- Discard the first two batches of ice made after replacement.
- Reset the filter indicator by holding the reset button for about three seconds, if your model has one.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the GSWF the same as the MSWF?
No. They look broadly similar but are different lengths and are not interchangeable. The GSWF is used in top-freezer, bottom-freezer and French-door models; the MSWF is used in GE side-by-side models such as the GSE, GSH, GSL and PSS series.
Can I use an MWF or MWFP in place of a GSWF?
No. The MWF / MWFP is a larger cartridge for a different housing and will not seat in a GSWF holder.
Does this fit my Kenmore refrigerator?
Yes, if your Kenmore manual or the old cartridge lists 46-9914, 469914 or 9914. Those Kenmore units are GE-built and use this exact filter.
Where do I find my refrigerator model number?

Almost always trapped air. Run 1.5 gallons through the dispenser in short bursts. If flow is still restricted, remove the cartridge and reseat it — an under-rotated filter will partially block the water path.
Do I need to turn off the water supply first?
No. The housing has an internal shut-off that closes as soon as the cartridge is removed. Expect a few drips at most.
What happens if I run the filter past six months?
The carbon becomes saturated, chlorine taste and odor start coming back through, and flow rate gradually drops as the media loads with sediment.
