Frigidaire PAULTRA PureAir Ultra Refrigerator Air Filter

PAULTRA is not the same as PAULTRA2. This is the original PureAir Ultra (PAULTRA) cartridge — a flat rectangular filter measuring 6.5" x 4.75". The PureAir Ultra II (PAULTRA2, part 242047805) is a small round cartridge measuring 3.8" x 1.8" and will not seat in a PAULTRA housing. Check the size of the filter you are removing before ordering.
Where it goes: back wall of the fresh food compartment, near the top, behind a snap-off vent cover or air tower panel. How it locks: slide into the slot and snap the cover shut — no tools. Water supply: not involved. This is an air filter only and has no effect on your water or ice.

Product Description

The Frigidaire PAULTRA is the replacement cartridge for the PureAir Ultra odor filtration system built into Frigidaire Gallery, Frigidaire Professional and Electrolux refrigerators. It sits in the airflow path inside the fresh food compartment, where an activated carbon core absorbs the odor compounds released by onions, garlic, fish, leftovers, cheese and produce as they age.

That matters because a refrigerator recirculates the same air continuously. Without a working filter, strong odors transfer between items and food picks up flavors it should not have. A saturated carbon core stops adsorbing, which is why the cartridge is a scheduled replacement part rather than something you clean and reuse.

Replacement takes under a minute. Press the release tab on the vent cover, pull the old cartridge straight out, unwrap the new one, slide it in and snap the cover closed. If your model has an air filter status light on the dispenser panel or control display, hold the reset button for about three seconds afterward to clear it.

This cartridge also carries Frigidaire part number 242061001 and supersedes the earlier 241754001, 241754002, 242047801 and 242047804 numbers. On Electrolux refrigerators the same cartridge is sold as EAFCBF (PureAdvantage), and under the Smart Choice program as SCPUREAIR2PK.

How to Install

  1. Open the refrigerator door and look at the back wall of the fresh food compartment, near the top. On most models the filter sits behind the vent panel or air tower; on some it is behind a small hinged cover marked PureAir Ultra.
  2. Press the release tab on the cover, or insert your fingers into the recess on the air tower, and pull the cover forward to open it.
  3. Grasp the old cartridge and slide it straight out. Discard it — carbon cartridges cannot be washed and reused.
  4. Remove the new cartridge from its plastic wrapper completely. A partially attached wrapper is the most common reason a new filter appears not to work.
  5. Slide the new cartridge into the slot in the same orientation as the one you removed. Current-production PAULTRA cartridges have the removable flap on one side only.
  6. Snap the cover or air tower panel back into place until it clicks.
  7. If your model has an air filter status indicator on the dispenser panel or interior control display, press and hold the reset button for about three seconds until the indicator returns to green or clears.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I tell whether I need PAULTRA or PAULTRA2? Look at the cartridge you are removing. PAULTRA is a flat rectangle about 6.5" x 4.75". PAULTRA2 is a small round puck about 3.8" x 1.8". They are not interchangeable and the housings are different shapes.

Does this filter change my water or ice? No. This is an air filter and it only treats the air inside the fresh food compartment. Water and ice are handled by a separate water filter cartridge such as the ULTRAWF or EPTWFU01, depending on your model.

Is 242061001 the same thing as PAULTRA? Yes. 242061001 is the Frigidaire part number for the PureAir Ultra cartridge. Older packaging and parts lists also use 241754001, 241754002, 242047801 and 242047804 for the same item.

My refrigerator is an Electrolux. Will this fit? If your Electrolux uses the EAFCBF PureAdvantage cartridge, yes — it is the same filter. PAULTRA replaces EAFCBF in Electrolux ICON French Door refrigerators. Confirm the part number on your old cartridge before ordering.

Can I wash the old filter instead of replacing it? No. Once the carbon is saturated it stops adsorbing odors, and rinsing does not restore it. The cartridge is designed as a scheduled replacement part.

My air filter light is still on after I changed the filter. Three things usually cause this: the reset button was not held long enough (about three seconds), the cartridge is not fully seated in its slot, or the plastic wrapper was not completely removed. Check all three, then reset again.

Do I need to turn anything off before changing it? No. There is no water line and no electrical connection involved. You can change the cartridge with the refrigerator running and the doors open.

Which way does the cartridge face? Install it in the same orientation as the one you removed. Current PAULTRA cartridges have the removable flap on one face only, and that face goes toward the airflow opening.

Why buy a multi-pack? The cartridge is on a six-month cycle, so a 2-pack covers one year and a 4-pack covers two. Buying ahead means the replacement is already in the drawer when the indicator turns.
