Description

GE MWFP Refrigerator Water Filter — Also Sold as GE MWF

ℹ️ MWFP vs MWF — What You Need to Know: The MWFP is the updated version of the original MWF filter, available from GE since September 2013. Despite the internal upgrade, GE continues to print "MWF" on the filter packaging and on the filter itself. If your refrigerator uses an MWF filter, this MWFP is the correct current replacement — they use the same physical design, fit the same housing, and are fully interchangeable.

MWFP vs MWF — Understanding the Difference

Feature GE MWFP (This Filter — Current) GE MWF (Original)
Available Since September 2013 — current standard Pre-2013 — original version
Physical Design Identical — same shape, size, and connection Identical — same shape, size, and connection
Filter Housing Same housing — fits all MWF refrigerators Same housing — fits all MWF refrigerators
Interchangeable? Yes — MWFP fits every refrigerator that originally used MWF
NSF Certification NSF/ANSI 42 & 53 NSF/ANSI 42 & 53
Filter Capacity 300 gallons or 6 months 300 gallons or 6 months
Filter Location Upper right corner inside the refrigerator Upper right corner inside the refrigerator
Packaging Label May say "MWF" or "MWFP" — GE uses both Labeled "MWF"
Why Does GE Still Write "MWF" on the Filter? GE made an internal improvement to the MWF filter in September 2013 and designated it the "MWFP" for tracking purposes. However, to avoid confusion for customers, GE continued printing "MWF" on the filter packaging and on the cartridge itself. This means if you order an MWF or MWFP today, you will receive the same current-production MWFP filter — there is no practical difference for the end customer.

Product Description

The GE MWFP refrigerator water filter — also sold as the GE MWF SmartWater filter — is the current standard replacement filter for a wide range of GE side-by-side, bottom-freezer, and French door refrigerators. It delivers clean, great-tasting water and ice by effectively reducing chlorine taste, odor, sediment, and particulates from your refrigerator's water and ice dispenser.

Located in the upper right corner inside the refrigerator, the MWFP uses a simple twist-and-lock design. No tools and no water shutoff are required — simply apply slight upward pressure while rotating clockwise to install, and counterclockwise to remove. The MWFP is fully backwards compatible with every refrigerator that originally used the MWF filter.

Compatibility Tip: This filter is compatible with any GE refrigerator that currently uses or originally used the MWF filter. The filter is located in the upper right corner inside the refrigerator. To confirm compatibility, check the part number on your current filter — if it says MWF, MWFP, MWFA, GWF, or any of the part numbers listed below, this is your correct replacement filter.

Installation Instructions

  1. Locate the Filter: The filter is located in the upper right corner inside your refrigerator compartment
  2. Remove Old Filter: Grasp the old filter and rotate counterclockwise (left) to unlock it, then pull straight out
  3. Prepare New Filter: Remove the protective cap from the new filter. Do not remove any seals or o-rings
  4. Install New Filter: Insert the new filter into the housing. Apply slight upward pressure while rotating clockwise (right) until the filter locks firmly in place
  5. Flush the System: Run water through the dispenser for approximately 2 gallons (around 5 minutes) to flush air and activate the filter. Initial water may appear slightly cloudy — this is normal
  6. Discard Initial Ice: Discard the first batch of ice produced after installation
  7. Reset Filter Indicator: Press and hold the filter reset button on your refrigerator display until the indicator resets. On models without an indicator, place a date sticker on the filter as a 6-month reminder
? Installation Tip: When installing, apply slight upward pressure while twisting clockwise — this helps the filter seat correctly in the housing. Do not force the filter. If it does not lock smoothly, remove and reinsert, making sure it is properly aligned before twisting.

Replacement Schedule

Timeline Action
Every 6 Months Replace filter for optimal performance and water quality
After 300 Gallons Replace filter (whichever comes first: 6 months or gallon capacity)
When Indicator Activates Most GE refrigerators will display a warning when replacement is due
If Flow Rate Decreases Replace immediately if water flow becomes noticeably slower
If Taste Changes Replace immediately if water develops an off-taste or odor

Frequently Asked Questions

My refrigerator uses an MWF filter. Can I use the MWFP as a replacement?

Yes — the MWFP is the current updated version of the MWF and is fully interchangeable. It uses the same physical design, fits the same filter housing, and installs in exactly the same way. GE released the MWFP in September 2013 as an internal upgrade to the MWF. Any MWF filter you purchase today is the MWFP, as GE still prints "MWF" on current filter packaging.

If I buy an MWF today, am I getting the MWFP?

Yes. Since September 2013, all GE MWF filters in production are technically the MWFP. GE continues to label the packaging and cartridge as "MWF" to avoid customer confusion, but the filter inside is the updated MWFP version. There is no difference in physical fit or installation.

What is the difference between MWFP and MWFA?

The MWFA was an earlier variant of the MWF designed for specific GE refrigerator models. The MWFP is fully backwards compatible and replaces both the original MWF and the MWFA. If your refrigerator used the MWFA, the MWFP is the correct current replacement.

Where is the MWF/MWFP filter located in my refrigerator?

The MWFP filter is located in the upper right corner inside the refrigerator compartment. It uses a twist-and-lock design — apply slight upward pressure while rotating clockwise to install, and counterclockwise to remove. No tools or water shutoff are required.

Is this filter compatible with Kenmore refrigerators?

Yes. Kenmore refrigerators using filter numbers 46-9991, 9991, 46-9996, and 9996 are compatible with the MWFP. These Kenmore models share GE's filter housing design and use the same replacement cartridge.
