Product Description

The 4204490 is the replacement water filter for Sub-Zero Classic Series built-ins, PRO 48 Series, Designer Series and Integrated refrigerators — the cartridge that sits behind the kick grille at the base of the unit and feeds both the water dispenser and the ice maker.

Inside is an activated carbon block, which is what does the work on the two things people actually notice about their water: the chlorine taste and smell that comes through on municipal supplies, and the fine grit, rust and sediment that make ice cloudy and leave residue in a glass. The block also holds back the scale-forming particles that build up in dispenser lines over a year of use.

Installation is a quarter-turn twist-lock — no tools, no shutting off the water supply, and nothing to disconnect. Sub-Zero rates this cartridge for 12 months, roughly double the interval of a typical refrigerator filter, and your refrigerator will prompt you on the control panel when the interval is up.

Installation Instructions

  1. Open the grille. The filter sits behind the front kick grille at the base of the refrigerator, not inside the food compartment. Pull out on the bottom edge of the grille and tilt it forward to expose the filter housing.
  2. Remove the old filter. Twist it counterclockwise about a quarter turn to unlock, then pull it straight out. There is no need to shut off the water — the internal valve closes on its own.
  3. Fit the new filter. Push it straight into the housing until it seats, then twist clockwise until it locks. Hand pressure only; no tools.
  4. Close the grille. Tilt it back into position until it snaps home.
  5. Flush the line. Run 3–5 gallons through the dispenser to clear trapped air and wet the carbon block. Cloudy or spluttering water at first is normal and settles within a few minutes of running.
  6. Reset the indicator. Clear the filter reminder on the control panel. The exact button sequence varies by model — your owner's manual has the procedure for yours.
Installation tip: the filter has to be seated fully before it will turn. If you meet resistance while twisting, pull it out and reinsert it straight rather than forcing it. A correctly fitted filter sits flush against the housing with no visible gap.

My old filter says 7005017 or 7009931. Can I use this one?

Yes. Both are earlier numbers that the 4204490 supersedes. The 7005017 shipped in units built before serial 4116297, and the current 4204490 replaces it.

My serial number falls between 4116297 and 4134313. What now?

That range spans the changeover between the old and current filter. Rather than working from the serial, pull the filter that is in the refrigerator now and read the number on its label — if it shows 4204490, 4290510, 9030868, 7005017 or 7009931, this filter fits.

Will this fit my UC-15 undercounter ice maker?

No. The UC-15 uses the 7012333 (also sold as 7042803), which is a physically different filter with a different housing. The two cannot be swapped in either direction.

Where is the filter in my Sub-Zero?

Behind the front kick grille at the base of the unit, not inside the refrigerator compartment. Pull out on the bottom edge of the grille and tilt it forward, and the housing is directly behind it.

Do I need to turn the water off to change it?

No. The housing has an internal valve that seals as soon as the old cartridge is unlocked, so you can change the filter with the supply live. Keep a cloth handy for the small amount of water held in the old cartridge.
