Kenmore 46-9085 & 46-9010 Refrigerator Water Filter — Filter 5 / EDR5RXD1 Compatible
Product Description
This is a replacement Kenmore 46-9085 / 46-9010 refrigerator water filter for Kenmore, Whirlpool, and KitchenAid side-by-side refrigerators that use the in-grille, quarter-turn cartridge. It is the same physical filter sold under the part numbers Whirlpool 4396508, 4396510, 4392857, 4396547, W10186668, and EveryDrop EDR5RXD1 (Filter 5), so any of those numbers printed on your old cartridge or on the sticker inside the grille means this filter fits.
The cartridge uses an activated carbon block to reduce chlorine taste, odor, and sediment in the water going to your dispenser and ice maker, and is rated for approximately 400 gallons or 6 months of normal household use. Installation is a straight swap — pull the old cartridge, push the new one in, twist a quarter turn, and flush.

Installation
- Open the bottom grille at the front base of the refrigerator, below the doors.
- Turn the old cartridge a quarter turn counterclockwise and pull it straight out. A small amount of water in the housing is normal.
- Remove the protective cap from the new filter and check that the O-rings are seated.
- Push the new cartridge firmly into the housing until it stops, then turn it a quarter turn clockwise until it locks. If it is not fully locked, water will not flow.
- Close the grille and run about 3–4 gallons through the dispenser to purge trapped air. Sputtering and cloudy water during this step are normal.
- Reset the filter indicator light if your refrigerator has one — usually by pressing and holding the filter or reset button for 3 seconds.
- Discard the first two or three batches of ice.

| Household water use | Suggested replacement |

| Well water or visibly high sediment | Every 3–4 months |
| Noticeably slower dispenser flow | Replace now, regardless of date |
| Vacation home / seasonal use | Every 6 months, and flush 1 quart after any long idle period |
Frequently Asked Questions
My old filter says 4396508 (or 4396510, EDR5RXD1, W10186668). Will this fit? Yes. Those are all the same cartridge under different brand and revision numbers. Kenmore 46-9085 and 46-9010 are the Sears part numbers for it.
What is the difference between 46-9085 and 46-9010? They are the same physical filter under two Kenmore catalog numbers from different production periods. Either number on your old cartridge or grille sticker indicates this filter.
How do I know if I need Filter 5 or Filter 3? Location. Filter 5 sits in the grille at the bottom front of the refrigerator. Filter 3 sits inside the refrigerator compartment. If you have to open the door to reach your filter, this is not the right one.
Water dispenses slowly or not at all after installing. The cartridge is almost certainly not locked. Pull it out, push it firmly all the way in, and turn a full quarter turn clockwise until it stops. Then flush 3–4 gallons to clear the air.
Why is my water cloudy after the swap? Trapped air in the carbon block. It clears on its own within a few gallons of flushing.
The filter light stayed red after I changed it. The indicator is on a timer, not a sensor. It has to be reset manually — typically by holding the filter or reset button for about 3 seconds.
Can I run the refrigerator without a filter? Most models in this platform require either a filter or a bypass plug in the housing for water to flow. Check your grille for a bypass cap if you plan to run without one.
