Kenmore 46-9084 & 46-9006 Refrigerator Water Filter — Twist-In Replacement for UKF8001, EveryDrop Filter 4 (EDR4RXD1), Whirlpool 4396395 & Bosch BORPLFTR20

Read the number printed on your current filter before ordering. This is the twist-in "Filter 4" size — the one that mounts inside the refrigerator and locks with a quarter turn. It replaces 46-9084, 46-9006, 46-9005, 46-9992, UKF8001, EDR4RXD1, 4396395, BORPLFTR20 and 00798470. If your old cartridge reads 46-9083, 46-9030, EDR3RXD1 or 4396841, that is a different push-button cartridge and this one will not seat.
Where this filter goes: inside the fresh-food compartment, at the top right, behind a small flip-down cover near the ceiling — not in the base grille and not in the freezer. It is a twist-in cartridge: push in and rotate roughly a quarter turn to lock. This same cartridge is sold under several brand names because Kenmore, Maytag, Amana, Jenn-Air, Whirlpool and Bosch French-door refrigerators all use the same filter housing.

About the Kenmore 46-9084 / 46-9006 Water Filter

The Kenmore 46-9084 (also printed as 9084 or 469084) and 46-9006 (9006, 469006) are Sears part numbers for the same cartridge Whirlpool sells as EveryDrop Filter 4 / EDR4RXD1, Maytag sells as UKF8001, and Bosch sells as BORPLFTR20 / 00798470. All of them use the identical twist-in body and internal carbon block, which is why a single filter covers such a wide range of refrigerators.

Inside is an activated carbon block that water passes through on its way to the dispenser and ice maker. It reduces chlorine taste, chlorine odor and sediment, so the water and ice you pour taste noticeably cleaner than unfiltered tap water. A fresh cartridge also keeps flow rate steady — a clogged filter is the single most common cause of a slow dispenser or small, hollow ice cubes.

Plan on roughly six months or about 200 gallons per cartridge, whichever comes first. Homes on well water, or on municipal supplies with heavy sediment, will usually want to change it sooner.

Compatible Refrigerator Models

This cartridge fits refrigerators built to accept the twist-in Filter 4 / UKF8001 housing. Match your model number against the series below — your full model number is on a sticker inside the fresh-food compartment, usually on the left-hand wall or behind the crisper drawers.

Model prefixes are listed because manufacturers append revision suffixes (for example MFI2568AES, MFI2568AEW and MFI2568AEB all use the same filter). If your model begins with one of the series above and your existing cartridge twists into the upper-right corner inside the fridge, this is the correct filter.

How to Install

  1. Open the fresh-food door and locate the filter cover at the upper right, near the ceiling of the compartment.
  2. Press the release and let the cover swing down so the end of the cartridge is exposed.
  3. Push the old cartridge in slightly and rotate it counter-clockwise about a quarter turn until it releases. Water shuts off automatically — no need to turn off the supply line.
  4. Pull the old cartridge straight out. A small amount of water may drip; have a cloth ready.
  5. Remove the cap from the new filter, align the tabs, push it straight in and rotate clockwise until it stops and sits flush.
  6. Swing the cover back up until it latches.
  7. Dispense and discard roughly 2 to 3 gallons (about 3–5 minutes of running the dispenser) to purge trapped air and loose carbon fines. Sputtering and grey-tinted water during this step are normal.
  8. Reset the filter indicator: press and hold the Filter Reset or Water Filter button on the dispenser panel for about 3 seconds until the light returns to green.
  9. Discard the first two full batches of ice so the ice maker clears its lines.

Replacement Schedule

Household water use Approximate volume Replace after
Light — 1 to 2 people, dispenser used occasionally Under 100 gallons 6 months
Average — family of 3 to 4, daily water and ice 150–200 gallons 5 to 6 months
Heavy — large household, ice maker running constantly 200+ gallons 3 to 4 months
Well water or visibly sediment-heavy supply Varies 3 months, or sooner if flow drops

Change the cartridge sooner if the dispenser slows noticeably, ice cubes shrink, or chlorine taste returns — those are the practical signals, and they often appear before the indicator light does.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 46-9084 the same filter as 46-9006?

Yes. Sears used several numbers for this cartridge over the years — 46-9005, 46-9006, 46-9084 and 46-9992 all refer to the same twist-in body. Any of them can be replaced with this filter.

My refrigerator manual calls for UKF8001 or EveryDrop Filter 4. Will this work?

Yes. UKF8001, EDR4RXD1, Filter 4 and 4396395 are all the same twist-in cartridge under different brand names. This filter is a direct replacement for all of them.

Does this fit a Bosch refrigerator?

If your Bosch or Thermador model takes BORPLFTR20, 00798470 or 12004484 — the filter that twists into the upper-right corner inside the fridge — then yes. Bosch models that use the UltraClarity or UltraClarity Pro cartridge (BORPLFTR10, BORPLFTR30, BORPLFTR50, BORPLFTR55) take a different filter and this one will not fit.

Where is the filter located?

Inside the fresh-food compartment at the top right, behind a small hinged cover near the ceiling. If your filter is in the grille at the bottom front of the refrigerator, you have a different cartridge.

Why is my water sputtering after installation?

Air trapped in the new cartridge. Run 2 to 3 gallons through the dispenser and it clears. Grey or cloudy water during the first flush is loose carbon dust and is expected.

My water is slow after changing the filter. What went wrong?

Almost always the cartridge is not fully seated. Remove it and reinstall, rotating clockwise until it stops firmly and the cover latches without force. If flow is still slow after flushing 3 gallons, check that the household shut-off valve behind the refrigerator is fully open.

The filter light stayed red after I installed the new cartridge.

The indicator is a timer, not a sensor — it has to be reset manually. Hold the Filter Reset button on the dispenser panel for about 3 seconds. On some models the button is labelled Water Filter or is reached by holding the Light and Lock buttons together.

Can I run the refrigerator without a filter?

Most models in these series will dispense with the cartridge removed, but the water is unfiltered. Some require a bypass plug to maintain flow — check the housing for a bypass cap if the dispenser stops working with the filter out.
