GE MWF SmartWater Refrigerator Water Filter (MWFP)
Filter location: This filter installs inside the refrigerator compartment, in the upper-right corner. It uses a twist-and-lock design — no tools required. If your GE refrigerator has a filter on the base grille or in the rear water valve area, see our GE RPWF / RPWFE or GE XWF listings instead.
About the GE MWF Filter
The GE MWF SmartWater filter is an OEM replacement cartridge for select GE side-by-side and bottom-freezer refrigerators. Originally sold as the MWF, the filter was updated in September 2013 and is now supplied as the MWFP — the current part number. Both part numbers refer to the same filter platform and the MWFP installs directly in any refrigerator that previously used the MWF, MWFA, GWF, GWFA, HWF, or HWFA cartridge.
The filter uses a certified activated carbon block to reduce chlorine taste and odour, sediment, and other common waterline impurities, delivering cleaner-tasting water and ice from your refrigerator dispenser.

Installation Instructions
- Locate the water filter housing in the upper-right corner inside the refrigerator compartment.
- Turn the old filter cartridge a half-turn to the left (counter-clockwise) and pull it straight out.
- Remove the new MWFP filter from its packaging.
- Optional but recommended: briefly run tap water through the top of the new cartridge before installing to improve initial flow.
- Insert the new filter into the housing and rotate clockwise approximately a half-turn until it locks into place. The filter will rise slightly as it seats — do not force or over-tighten.
- Dispense approximately 1½ gallons (about 3 minutes) of water through the door dispenser to flush the filter and purge any air from the line. Discard this water.
- Reset the filter indicator light on your refrigerator (see your owner's manual for the specific button combination for your model).
Replacement Schedule
| Usage Level | Replace Every | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Standard household | 6 months or 300 gallons | Whichever comes first |

| Poor incoming water quality | Every 3–4 months | Hard water, high sediment, or strong odour |
| Indicator light is on | Replace promptly | Do not wait for the 6-month mark if the light triggers early |
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the MWF and MWFP?
The MWFP is the updated version of the original MWF, released in September 2013. They are fully interchangeable — the MWFP installs in any refrigerator that previously used the MWF. GE now supplies the MWFP as the current replacement for both part numbers.
How do I know if my GE refrigerator uses the MWF filter?
Look for a round, cylindrical cartridge in the upper-right corner inside the refrigerator compartment. If your existing filter is labelled MWF, MWFP, MWFA, GWF, GWFA, HWF, or HWFA, this is the correct replacement. You can also check your refrigerator's owner's manual or the model number lookup on the GE Appliances website.
My refrigerator model is not listed above. Will this filter still fit?
The list above covers the most common compatible models but is not exhaustive. Check the filter label currently installed in your refrigerator — if it shows any of the alternate part numbers listed above, the MWFP is a direct replacement. When in doubt, confirm via your owner's manual or the GE Appliances parts look-up tool.
Does the filter location matter? My GE refrigerator has a filter in a different spot.
Yes. The MWF/MWFP is specifically for refrigerators with a round filter in the upper-right corner of the interior. GE refrigerators with a filter on the base grille use the RPWF or RPWFE, and newer French door models typically use the XWF or XWFE. Check the existing filter label before ordering.
How long does the GE MWF filter last?
The filter is rated for 300 gallons or 6 months, whichever comes first. Heavy usage or poor-quality incoming water may require earlier replacement. Most refrigerators have a filter indicator light that signals when replacement is due.
Do I need to turn off the water supply to replace the filter?
No. The MWF housing has a built-in shut-off valve that engages when the filter is removed. You can replace the cartridge without shutting off your home water supply.
Why is my water dispenser slow after installing a new filter?
This is normal immediately after installation. Air trapped in the new cartridge restricts flow until it is purged. Dispense 1½ gallons of water continuously to flush the filter — flow will return to normal. If the slow flow persists after flushing, check that the filter is fully seated (rotated until it stops) and that the household water supply pressure is within the 40–120 psi operating range.
