GE MSWF SmartWater Refrigerator Water Filter (MSWFA)
The GE MSWF is the replacement water filter cartridge for GE and GE Profile refrigerators fitted with the MSWF SmartWater filtration system. It reduces chlorine taste and odor, sediment, rust particles and turbidity, so water and ice from the dispenser taste clean and fresh.
The cartridge sits in the upper right corner inside the fresh food compartment and fits with a simple twist-and-lock action — no tools, no water shut-off, and no plumbing work. One cartridge lasts up to 300 gallons or 6 months, whichever comes first. The same part is also listed by GE as MSWFA; both are the identical filter.
Key Features
- Better-tasting water and ice: reduces chlorine taste and odor at the dispenser
- Sediment and particulate reduction: captures rust particles, grit and turbidity carried in the supply line
- 300 gallons of capacity: roughly 6 months of use for a typical household
- 0.9 GPM flow rate: keeps dispenser and ice maker filling at full speed
- Tool-free twist-and-lock fit: swaps out in under a minute with no shut-off valve required
- Direct MSWF / MSWFA replacement: drops straight into the existing GE filter head

How to Change the Filter
- Find the cartridge. Open the fridge door and look in the upper right corner of the fresh food compartment.
- Release the old filter. Grip the cartridge and turn it left (counterclockwise) about half a turn, then pull it straight out. A small amount of water may drip — have a cloth ready.
- Fit the new filter. Push the MSWF into the head and turn right (clockwise) about half a turn until it stops and feels locked.
- Flush the line. Run roughly 4 gallons through the dispenser, about 5 minutes at full flow. Cloudy water and sputtering at first are just trapped air and will clear.
- Dump the first ice. Discard the first full batch of ice made after fitting.
- Reset the indicator. Press and hold the filter reset button until the light clears. No indicator light? Write the month and year on the cartridge with a marker.
When to Replace
| Trigger | What to do |
|---|---|
| Every 6 months | Replace as routine maintenance |
| After 300 gallons | Replace, whichever comes first with the 6-month mark |
| Indicator light or icon activates | Replace — the refrigerator is tracking usage for you |
| Dispenser flow slows | Replace — the cartridge is loaded with sediment |
| Water or ice tastes off | Replace — the carbon media is spent |
Frequently Asked Questions
Is MSWFA the same as MSWF?
Yes. MSWFA is simply a later GE designation for the same cartridge. Either part number fits the same filter head and performs identically.
Can I use a GSWF instead of an MSWF?
No. The MSWF and GSWF are different sizes with different connection mechanisms and different housings, and neither is an updated version of the other. If your refrigerator was built for the GSWF, an MSWF will not physically fit.
Where is the MSWF located in my refrigerator?
In the upper right corner inside the fresh food compartment, mounted vertically in an exposed filter head. It is visible as soon as you open the fridge door — you do not need to remove shelves or panels to reach it.
Do I need to turn off the water supply?
No. The filter head shuts the flow off automatically as the cartridge is removed, so the swap can be done with the water supply left connected.
Why is the water cloudy after fitting a new filter?
Air trapped in the new cartridge and the supply line makes the first few glasses look milky and the dispenser splutter. Running about 4 gallons through clears it completely.
How long does one filter last?
Up to 300 gallons or 6 months, whichever comes first. Households with heavy dispenser use, an ice maker running constantly, or sediment-heavy supply water will reach the end of a cartridge sooner.
