How to Confirm You Need the MSWF (Not GSWF)
- Your current filter is labeled MSWF, WR02X12345, WR02X12801, or PS1559689
- Your filter is located in the upper right corner inside the refrigerator compartment
- Your refrigerator is a GE side-by-side or bottom-freezer model
- Your filter uses a twist-and-lock design (rotate counterclockwise to remove)
- Your filter housing does not have a flip-down compartment door (that's the GSWF)
Product Description
The GE MSWF refrigerator water filter is a genuine OEM replacement filter designed for select GE side-by-side and bottom-freezer refrigerators. It delivers clean, great-tasting water and ice by effectively reducing chlorine taste, odor, sediment, and particulates from your refrigerator's water and ice dispenser.
The MSWF features a simple twist-and-lock design located in the upper right corner inside your refrigerator. No tools are required — simply rotate the old filter counterclockwise to remove and install the new filter clockwise until locked. GE recommends flushing 4 gallons of water through the new filter before use.

Compatibility Tip: To confirm compatibility, check that your current filter is labeled MSWF or matches one of the part numbers listed below. The MSWF filter is located in the upper right corner inside your refrigerator. If your filter is in a flip-down compartment, you likely need the GSWF instead.

Installation Instructions
- Locate the Filter: The filter is located in the upper right corner inside your refrigerator compartment
- Remove Old Filter: Grasp the filter and slowly rotate it to the left (counterclockwise). The cartridge will rotate approximately 1/2 turn, then pull straight out
- Install New Filter: Insert the new filter into the housing and slowly rotate to the right (clockwise) until it stops — approximately 1/2 turn. The filter should be firmly locked in place
- Flush the System: Run water through the dispenser at full flow for approximately 4 gallons (around 5 minutes) to flush air and activate the filter. Initial water may appear slightly cloudy — this is normal
- Discard Initial Ice: Discard the first batch of ice produced after installation
- Reset Filter Indicator: If your refrigerator has a filter indicator light, press and hold the reset button until the indicator resets. On models without an indicator light, place a date sticker on the new filter as a reminder to replace it in 6 months

| If Taste Changes | Replace immediately if water develops an off-taste or odor |
Frequently Asked Questions
Are the MSWF and GSWF interchangeable?
No — not at all. The MSWF and GSWF are completely different filters with different physical shapes, sizes, dimensions, and connection mechanisms. They are designed for entirely different filter housings. Neither is an updated version of the other. If your refrigerator uses the GSWF, this MSWF filter will not physically fit.
How do I know if I need the MSWF or the GSWF?
Check your current filter's label — if it says MSWF, you need this filter. If it says GSWF, you need the GSWF instead. You can also check the location: the MSWF is located in the upper right corner inside the refrigerator compartment, while the GSWF is found in a flip-down compartment typically on GE Arctica and Profile top-freezer and bottom-freezer models.
Is the MSWF compatible with Kenmore or Hotpoint refrigerators?
Yes. Some Hotpoint and Amana side-by-side refrigerators that share GE's filter housing platform are compatible with the MSWF. A small number of older Kenmore models using part number 9914 may also be compatible. Always verify by checking the part number on your current filter.
Where is the MSWF filter located in my refrigerator?
The MSWF filter is located in the upper right corner inside your refrigerator compartment. It uses a twist-and-lock design — rotate counterclockwise to remove and clockwise to install. If your filter is in a flip-down door compartment instead, you likely have the GSWF filter, not the MSWF.
How much water should I flush through a new MSWF filter?
GE recommends flushing approximately 4 gallons of water (around 5 minutes at full dispenser flow) through the new filter before use. This purges air from the system and activates the carbon filtration media. The water may appear slightly cloudy during flushing — this is normal and will clear.
